Quella eritrea, con oltre 6mila presenze, tra regolari e non, è una delle comunità straniere più antiche radicate a Milano. I primi sono arrivati negli anni Trenta, dal paese che era stato colonia italiana dalla fine dell´800. La comunità è diventata numerosissima negli anni ’70, durante la lotta di indipendenza dall´Etiopia, quando i soldi della diaspora finanziavano la guerriglia del Fronte di liberazione.
La Chiesa Ortodossa Eritrea, chiamata Tewahedo (“unitaria”) dai fedeli, è una Chiesa ortodossa orientale per molti secoli unita alla Chiesa copta ortodossa e quindi soggetta al Patriarcato di Alessandria d’Egitto. Dal 1959, la Chiesa Tewahedo è divenuta autocefala, può quindi scegliere il proprio patriarca. La Chiesa Tewahedo vanta circa 50 milioni di fedeli, la maggioranza dei quali vive in Eritrea ed Etiopia. Alcune comunità negli Stati Uniti e in Canada raggruppano migliaia di fedeli. L’Eritrea e l’Etiopia rappresentano l’unico caso di cristianesimo “africano” autoctono, non d’importazione europea, ma di antica tradizione di diretta derivazione apostolica. Il cristianesimo eritreo ed etiopico è una sintesi originale tra l’antica tradizione cristiana d’Oriente e la realtà africana.
